Understanding the Importance of Proper Drying and Curing
If you want top-notch bud, you've got to nail the drying and curing process. It's not just about getting your weed ready to smoke – it's about preserving all those awesome flavors, aromas, and potency. Plus, proper drying and curing help keep nasty mold and bacteria at bay, so you're not just maximizing quality, you're also keeping things safe.
Why Drying and Curing are Crucial for Cannabis Quality
First things first, you gotta harvest at the right time. Too early or too late, and you're already starting on the wrong foot. Once you've got your timing down, it's all about how you hang 'em. Some folks like to hang whole plants, others go for individual branches. Heck, you can even lay them out on drying racks if that's your style. The important thing is to keep an eye on them. You're looking for that sweet spot where the smaller stems snap instead of bend. That's when you know they're ready for the next step. And remember, patience is a virtue here. When picking your drying spot, cleanliness is key. You wouldn't want to eat off a dirty plate, right? Same goes for your cannabis. Look for a place that's easy to keep clean and secure. You'll need to be able to control the temperature, humidity, and light exposure, so keep that in mind. And don't forget about air circulation - your buds need to breathe! Make sure the space is well-ventilated and can maintain consistent conditions. It's all about creating a cozy, stable environment for your harvest. Now, let's talk temperature. This is super important for preserving those delicious terpenes and keeping mold at bay. You're aiming for a cool 60-70°F (15-21°C). Too hot, and you'll dry out your buds too quickly. Too cold, and you risk mold. If you need to, use air conditioners, heaters, or environmental controllers to keep things just right. Remember, steady temperature is key to preserving the quality and potency of your cannabis. Humidity is another big player in the drying game. You want even drying without any risk of mold, so aim for a relative humidity (RH) between 55-60%. Use dehumidifiers or humidifiers to dial in that sweet spot, and keep a hygrometer handy to monitor the RH. Getting this right is crucial for preserving your cannabis's quality and potency. It's a bit of a balancing act, but once you get it down, your buds will thank you. Last but not least, let's chat about air circulation. Good airflow is like a gentle breeze for your buds - it helps them dry evenly and keeps mold and mildew away. Set up some oscillating fans to keep the air moving, but don't blast your buds directly. You want movement, not a hurricane! An exhaust fan on low can also help remove excess moisture and keep humidity in check. Remember, proper air circulation is key to preserving the quality and potency of your cannabis. It's all about creating that perfect environment for your buds to thrive in. This is where we start turning those fresh, green plants into the good stuff. The main goal here is to get rid of excess moisture without messing up all those awesome cannabinoids and terpenes. Similar to trying to dry out your favorite t-shirt without shrinking it or fading the colors. You've got a few options for how to do this - hang drying, rack drying, or whole plant drying. Each has its own pros and cons, so you'll need to figure out what works best for you and your setup. First things first - harvesting. This is where it all begins, folks. You've got to nail the timing here. Harvest too early, and you're leaving potency on the table. Too late, and you might end up with a couch-lock effect that'll glue you to your seat. Once you've got the timing down, make sure you're using proper harvesting techniques. Doing this right sets you up for success in the drying process and helps ensure you end up with top-quality bud. Now, let's talk about how to actually dry these babies. You've got a few options here. Hang drying is like letting your plants bungee jump - you suspend individual branches upside down from a line or rack. Rack drying is more like laying them out on a beach towel - you spread individual buds or small branches on mesh or wire racks. And whole plant drying? That's like hanging your entire plant upside down, kind of like those upside-down tomato planters. Each method has its own quirks, so you'll need to choose based on your space, the amount of bud you're drying, and what works best for you. Here's where you really need to pay attention. Drying isn't a set-it-and-forget-it kind of deal. You've got to keep an eye on things and make adjustments as needed. Regularly check the temperature, humidity, and air circulation to make sure everything's on point. If something's off, don't be afraid to make changes. Maybe you need to adjust a fan or tweak the humidity. The key is to stay on top of things and maintain those ideal drying conditions. It might seem like a lot of work, but trust me, it's worth it when you end up with perfectly dried, top-shelf bud. Alright, let's talk about the hiccups you might encounter during the drying process. It's not always smooth sailing, but don't worry - we've got your back. The most common issues you might face are uneven drying, mold growth (yuck!), and funky smells. These problems are like uninvited guests at a party - annoying, but manageable if you know how to handle them. The key is to figure out what's causing the issue and then make the necessary tweaks to your drying setup. Keep a close eye on things and don't be afraid to make adjustments. With a bit of vigilance, you can nip these problems in the bud (pun intended) and end up with some top-notch weed. Let's break down these pesky problems a bit more. Uneven drying is like having a half-cooked meal - it's just not right and can really mess with the quality of your final product. Mold is the boogeyman of cannabis drying - it can sneak up on you if your conditions aren't on point. And that funky smell? You might think your cannabis is wearing bad cologne. It usually means something's off with your drying or curing process. The good news is, all of these issues are preventable with the right know-how and attention to detail. Now we're getting to the good stuff - curing. This is the final step in your post-harvest journey, and boy, is it important. Think of it as sending your cannabis to finishing school. You're storing those dried buds in a controlled environment to break down chlorophyll and other not-so-great compounds. Curing is what takes your cannabis from good to great, enhancing the flavor, aroma, and potency. Trust me, you don't want to skip this step if you're aiming for top-shelf bud. Why is curing such a big deal?? First off, it helps break down chlorophyll - that's what gives your bud that harsh, grassy taste. Nobody wants that! Curing also enhances the flavor and aroma of your cannabis, bringing out all those delicious terpenes. And let's not forget about potency - curing can actually make your weed more potent. The most important thing you'll need is airtight containers. Glass jars are the gold standard, but plastic containers can work too. Think of it like you're choosing Tupperware for your leftovers - you want something that'll keep things fresh. You'll also want to grab a hygrometer to keep an eye on humidity levels, and a thermometer to monitor temperature. These tools are like your curing compass - they'll help you stay on course and avoid any curing catastrophes. First, you'll want to store your dried buds in those airtight containers we talked about earlier. Find a cool, dark place - think of it as a spa retreat for your cannabis. Keep a close eye on the humidity and temperature levels - you're aiming for that Goldilocks zone where everything is just right. These are the two key players in the curing game. Burping is like giving your buds a breath of fresh air. You're opening up those containers regularly to let out excess moisture and keep those humidity levels just right. It's like airing out a stuffy room - necessary and refreshing! Monitoring, on the other hand, is all about keeping a watchful eye on your precious cargo. You're checking humidity and temperature levels like a hawk, making sure everything's in that sweet spot. It's like being a helicopter parent, but for your weed. Think of it as letting your cannabis take a deep breath. It's pretty much mandatory for maintaining the right humidity levels in your curing container. Without burping, you're risking mold growth - and nobody wants moldy weed! Same for opening the windows in your house to prevent that musty smell. Regular burping is your ticket to high-quality, properly cured cannabis. It might seem like a hassle, but your taste buds (and lungs) will thank you later. Now, onto monitoring. This is where you channel your inner scientist. Regular check-ins on your curing process are the two most important tasks for quality flower. You're looking at humidity and temperature levels, making sure they're in that Goldilocks zone - not too high, not too low, but just right. You've put in all this work, now let's make sure it lasts. Proper storage is key to maintaining the quality and potency of your cannabis. Think of it as preserving a fine wine. You want to keep those cured buds in an airtight container, tucked away in a cool, dark place. Same for finding the perfect hiding spot for your secret stash. Keep an eye on those humidity and temperature levels too - they're just as important in storage as they were during curing. Whatever you use, make sure it seals tight. Now, find a cool, dark place to stash your stash. Light and heat are the enemies of good bud, so think cool and shady. A closet or drawer works great. And hey, if you're planning on storing for a while, you might want to invest in some humidity control packs to keep things perfect. When it comes to storage containers, not all are created equal. You want something airtight - we're talking Fort Knox level security here. Glass jars are a popular choice, but there are also some great plastic options out there. Look for containers specifically designed for cannabis storage with tight-fitting lids. Just like you would for dinner leftovers. Finally, let's talk location, location, location. Your cannabis needs a cool, dark place to call home. Think of it as a vampire - it doesn't like heat or sunlight. Avoid storing your stash near windows or heat sources. A closet or drawer works great. With the right storage conditions, you'll be enjoying high-quality bud for months to come. Proper drying and curing are essential for achieving the best possible final product. Regular monitoring and adjustments are crucial for ensuring optimal drying and curing conditions. By following the tips and techniques outlined in this guide, growers can achieve a high-quality final product that is rich in flavor, aroma, and potency.Choosing the Right Space

How Long Do Cannabis Products Last?
Is it your lucky day? You just discovered a stash that was once lost and gone forever. Maybe it’s been a couple of months, even years? The first thing we assume is that the weed is stale, dried out, not effective, and probably tastes like dirt. While that is somewhat true and easy to understand, tossing it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It all comes down to understanding how long do cannabis products last, which is directly influenced by storage conditions and the type of product. Even though cannabis comes from a living, breathing plant, it doesn’t act the same as our garden vegetables do. Unlike many fruits and veggies that continue to breathe after being harvested, cannabis undergoes a different process. The process, known as decarboxylation, is where the cannabinoids are activated through heat or aging rather than simply rotting or decomposing. Cannabis flower has properties that make it less prone to expiring quickly. The main reason for this comes from cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) and terpenes, which are natural preservatives. These compounds help protect the flower from bacteria and fungi growth. Havingantimicrobial propertiesprolongs the life of your cannabis products. Anything you purchase “fresh” is suggested to be consumed within a short time. For example, milk. You store it in the fridge because if you left it out, it would curdle almost immediately and go sour. Another example that is more comparable to the proper storage for cannabis is paint. You can’t leave the lid off and sitting out in the sun for a week and expect it to have the same consistency and effect as if it were properly stored. Nothing exciting happens if cannabis is not fresh. If it looks dried up or more brown than it should be, it is still smokeable. Your only concern with stale, dried-out bud is its lack of potency, taste, and smell. Over time, THC will degrade into CBN (cannabinol), which reduces any psychoactive effects. The worst possible thing that can happen if cannabis is not fresh is mold growth. In short, hidden. Keep your weed away from heat, humidity, sunlight, and open air. The best way to store weed is somewhere dark, dry, and comfortably cool. This also means ditching the plastic Ziploc bags and anything that is not airtight. Proper Storage Store cannabis in airtight, opaque containers. Glass jars with airtight lids or high-quality, resealable plastic containers are ideal. Keep the containers in a cool, dark, and dry place. Avoid areas with excessive heat, light, or humidity. Temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C) and relative humidity around 55-65% are recommended. Avoid Sunlight Cannabis is sensitive to light, especially ultraviolet (UV) rays. Exposure to sunlight can degrade cannabinoids and terpenes, affecting potency and flavor. Control Humidity Too much humidity can lead to mold growth, while too little can dry out the cannabis, making it brittle and losing its potency. The number one and most important indicator that your cannabis flower is expired is mold growth. There is absolutely nothing good that comes out of consuming moldy weed. Aside from mold, the smell (or lack thereof) will indicate that your flower is expired. Avoid buying in bulk For all of you slow-tokers and those who are stocking up for the zombie apocalypse, you need to know the best practices to preserve your herb. But, for the rest of us, it’s best to stock up on just enough for a couple of months at most. Don’t have your JARS Budtender missing you for too long. Those fancy little bags we give you aren’t meant to be long-term storage for your bud. It would be awesome if you got a dope glass jar with every purchase, but that’s just not practical. Low humidity If you have longer hair, you know just how brutal humidity can be. The National Cannabis Industry Association recommends humidity levels to be between 59% and 63%. Having a humidity level that is too low will cause the trichomes to dry out. You can keep tabs on humidity levels with a hygrometer. This one on Amazon is less than $6. Avoid sunlight Not only does direct sunlight affect our skin, it affects our weed, too! UV rays can penetrate and heat up the container you store your cannabis in. What happens is the THC will convert to CBN (cannibnol), which has no potent benefits. So you have a stash spot in mind, a cool, dark, space. Great! But, there are still a couple of factors that will speed up the shelf-life and cause your cannabis not to last long. For example, try not to store multiple strains together. Each strain has its own terpene and flavor profile and should not cross-contaminate with other strains. Another thing to avoid is cramming as much weed as possible in one container. This will cause a lack of oxygen while increasing the humidity in the container. On the other hand, if you store your cannabis in a container that is too large, the buds will dry out faster. Lastly, stay away from plastics! Those Ziploc bags will only cause static and reduce the potency of the trichomes. Plastic containers are also sub-par when it comes to keeping things tightly sealed. When you store your cannabis correctly, you can expect its freshness to last at least 6 months up to a year. A fail-proof storage option consists of the following: Using an opaque glass jar. Just like some beer bottles, an opaque glass will block out any UV rays. Glass jars with a tight-fitting lid. An airtight seal will keep heat and humidity far away from your stash. Only grind what is needed. Once the flower is ground up, it has more room for oxygen, causing it to degrade and lose potency right away. If you absolutely have to store your flower, and a plastic bag is your only choice… sure. It shouldn’t be your end solution for storage, though. If you’re taking a quick trip to your buddies house for a smoke-down, a large glass jar can seem inconvenient. Fair enough. Since you plan on lighting up within the next few hours, a quick trip in a plastic bag won’t cause any harm. But, for long-term storage, opaque glass jars are the way to go. There are several options on the market for containers that are smell-proof, waterproof, and have an airtight seal. You can try out these budget-friendly options on Amazon. Many brands use vacuum-seal technology along with rubber or silicone seals. These are great qualities to have for a smell-proof container. If you need an immediate DIY option, grab an old pill bottle for a nug or two. Again, don’t resort to this as a full-time storage option. Do you own a freezer? Then technically, yes, you can freeze marijuana and CBD products. But, should you really? It’s a dark and cool place for storage, right? The benefit of storing these products in the freezer is preserving the chemical makeup of the bud, keeping it as potent as the first day you got it. The major drawback is with extremely low temperatures, trichomes easily fall off and lose their stickiness.Proper cannabis storage is important

Mastering Terpenes Chemistry and the Aroma of Weed: A Guide to Cannabis Connoisseurship
When it comes to the Cannabis sativa plant, we owe a lot of thanks to its class of organic compounds, aka terpenes. They are responsible for the diverse smells and tastes of cannabis, anywhere from fruity and sweet to earthy and pungent.
Anyone who lives, breathes, sleeps, eats marijuana can greatly benefit from knowing and understanding the terpene chemistry of cannabis. Just coming to this article is the perfect start to self-learning your way to cannabis connoisseurship! Did you know that terpenes are actually in a variety of plants like herbs, fruits, and flowers? Yup, and their responsibilities are the same, distinct smells and tastes. Terpenes also have a potential influence on the effects of cannabis. This is done by its interaction with cannabinoids, and results in what is known as the entourage effect. This means that terpenes, when combined with cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) can enhance the overall therapeutic effects of the plant. Also, terpenes are antimicrobial and are needed for plants to stay healthy and have protection from pests and pathogens. To break down exactly what terpenes are, we have to get slightly scientific. At a molecular level, terpenes are hydrocarbons composed of repeating isoprene units (C5H8). They are classified based on the number of these units, with monoterpenes (two isoprene units) and sesquiterpenes (three isoprene units) being the most common in cannabis. Terpene biosynthesis in cannabis begins with the precursor molecules isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP). These two molecules combine to form geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP), which serves as the building block for all terpenes. Next, enzymes in the cannabis plant catalyze various chemical reactions that transform GPP into specific terpenes. These enzymes, called terpene synthases, are responsible for creating the diverse array of terpenes found in cannabis. Depending on the specific combination of enzymes and reactions, different terpenes are produced. For example, the enzyme geranyl pyrophosphate synthase converts GPP into geranyl pyrophosphate, a precursor to monoterpenes like myrcene and limonene. The regulation of terpene biosynthesis in cannabis is complex and can be influenced by factors such as genetics, environmental conditions, and stressors like pests or diseases. These factors can impact the type and amount of terpenes produced by the plant. Myrcene: known for its potential sedative effects. May help with relaxation, stress relief, and sleep. It is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Myrcene is a monoterpene with a musky, earthy aroma. Limonene: is thought to have mood-enhancing properties and may help reduce stress and anxiety. It is also considered to be an antioxidant and may have anti-inflammatory benefits. Limonene is a monoterpene with a citrusy scent. Pinene: has more energizing and focus-enhancing effects. It may also act as a bronchodilator and have potential anti-inflammatory benefits. Pinene is a monoterpene with a pine-like aroma. Linalool: has calming and relaxing effects, making it potentially useful for reducing anxiety and promoting sleep. It may also have anticonvulsant and anti-inflammatory properties. Linalool is a monoterpene alcohol with a floral scent. β-Caryophyllene: has potential anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, and may be beneficial for conditions like arthritis and chronic pain. It is unique among terpenes as it can also bind to cannabinoid receptors in the body. Beta-Caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene with a spicy, woody aroma. Different cannabis strains have unique terpene profiles, which can be used to differentiate between them. You can typically tell within the name of some strains what the dominant terpenes are. For example, any lemon strain, like "Lemon Kush" and "Limoncello", will be rich in limonene terpenes. Here are a few more examples. Prepare yourself for an otherworldly journey with Mac 1, a well-balanced Hybrid strain crafted from the fusion of Alien Cookies, Columbian, and Starfighter. This strain boasts a terpene profile abundant in Limonene, Caryophyllene, and Myrcene, delivering a delightful scent of sweet earthiness and citrus. Mac 1 offers a harmonious and euphoric high, ideal for socializing and igniting creativity. Indulge in the exceptional flavors and uplifting effects of Mac 1. Gorgeous Glue from Nura Cannabis Stick with the finest choice, Gorgeous Glue, a well-balanced Hybrid strain produced from GG #4 and a lineage that is not known. This strain contains a terpene profile abundant in Caryophyllene, Myrcene, and Limonene, providing a pleasant scent of earthy sweetness and pine. This strain, which leans more towards sativa, is famous for its well-balanced impact from the Pinene terpene. It provides a euphoric and uplifting feeling for the mind while also soothing the body. Although it may not have a strong scent of pinene, the effects of this terpene can still be felt in the invigorating and energetic experience it offers. The medicinal benefits of cannabis terpenes are quite intriguing. Research indicates that these aromatic compounds possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties, which could aid in combating various health issues. Moreover, there is growing interest in the potential therapeutic effects of terpenes on mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. The medicinal effects of terpenes can vary based on: The specific terpene profile of a cannabis strain The concentration of each terpene Individual physiology and endocannabinoid system Interaction with cannabinoids and other compounds in cannabis Terpenes are believed to contribute to the overall therapeutic effects of cannabis by: Enhancing the absorption of cannabinoids Interacting with neurotransmitters and receptors in the body Providing their own therapeutic effects Modulating the effects of THC and other cannabinoids Terpenes interact with the body through various mechanisms, influencing both physiological and psychological processes. Here's how terpenes can interact with the body. Inhalation: When terpenes are inhaled, whether through smoking, vaporizing, or aromatherapy, they enter the bloodstream through the lungs. From there, they can travel to different parts of the body and interact with various systems. Absorption: Terpenes can also be absorbed through the skin, such as when using topicals or creams infused with terpenes. They can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream, where they can exert their effects. Interaction with Receptors: Some terpenes can interact with receptors in the body, including cannabinoid receptors like CB1 and CB2, as well as other receptors like serotonin and adenosine receptors. This interaction can influence neurotransmitter release and modulate physiological functions. Enzyme Inhibition: Certain terpenes may inhibit enzymes responsible for metabolizing neurotransmitters or other compounds in the body. This can affect the duration and intensity of certain physiological processes. Synergistic Effects: Terpenes can work synergistically with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, aka the entourage effect. This means that terpenes, when combined with cannabinoids, may enhance or modify the overall therapeutic effects of cannabis. Overall, terpenes have the potential to interact with the body in complex ways, influencing mood, cognition, pain perception, and other physiological processes. Terpene testing is super important for understanding the medicinal benefits and potential effects of cannabis products. It can help consumers make informed decisions about the cannabis products they use. The cannabis industry is growing rapidly, with a focus on adding terpenes to CBD oils and edibles. Aroma and Flavor: Terpene testing helps consumers understand the aromatic profile of a cannabis strain. By knowing the terpene composition, individuals can choose strains based on their preferred scents and flavors. Effects and Potency: Terpenes can influence the effects of cannabis, so knowing the terpene profile of a strain can provide insight into its potential therapeutic effects. This information allows consumers to select strains that align with their desired outcomes. Product Consistency: Terpene testing helps ensure consistency in product quality from batch to batch. By analyzing terpene levels, producers can maintain the desired aroma, flavor, and effects of a strain over time. Strain Identification: Terpene testing can help verify the authenticity of a cannabis strain. By comparing terpene profiles, consumers can confirm that they are purchasing the strain they desire. Research and Development: Terpene testing is essential for researchers studying the medicinal properties of cannabis. Understanding the terpene composition of different strains can aid in identifying potential therapeutic applications. The future of terpene research holds great promise as scientists continue to explore the diverse and intricate world of cannabis terpenes. Understanding the Impact of the Cannabis Industry: What is the Cole Memorandum
In the 21st century, more and more states have been legalizing cannabis, both for medical and recreational use, despite the fact that it's still federally restricted. This has created quite a unique and complex situation, with state laws clashing with federal laws in a way that's left a lot of businesses, consumers, and law enforcement officials feeling pretty confused and uncertain.
Let's go back in time about a decade, and give a shout out to our United States Deputy Attorney General, James M. Cole. Thanks to him, in 2013 he created the Cole Memorandum and completely changed the game for the rules, regulations, trials, and tribulations of the federal law and cannabis. Basically, they're saying, "Hey, we get that some states are cool with marijuana, so we're not going to go after everyone." But, and this is a big "but," there are some lines you just can't cross. Think of it like this: you wouldn't want your teenager getting their hands on pot, right? That's why selling to minors is a big no-no. Of course, we don't want dangerous criminals making a buck off of it either. The bottom line of the Cole Memo was that if you're keeping things legal and safe, you're probably in the clear. But if you're dealing with gangs, taking it across state lines, or putting others at risk, well, the feds will be getting involved. Let's be clear that the Cole Memorandum is not a law. It's more of a guidance for the law enforcement in legal states regarding growing, selling, and consuming cannabis. The memo states that consuming cannabis is fair game unless it falls under one of these eight cases: 1. Selling marijuana to minor 2. Profits from marijuana sales going to criminal organizations 3. Taking marijuana across state lines to an illegal state 4. Using marijuana to traffic other illegal drugs 5. Allowing violence and firearms in the growing of marijuana 6. Driving under the influence of marijuana 7. Growing marijuana on public lands 8. Consuming marijuana on federal property Seems pretty legit right? It puts a tight hold on the activities we don't stand for in the cannabis industry. The outline of the memo is basically just wanting marijuana in legal states to be sold to adults that want to get high on their own time. Before the Cole Memorandum came along, the federal government's approach to enforcing cannabis laws was all over the place. Some administrations took a pretty hands-off stance, while others were much more aggressive in going after cannabis-related activities, even in states where it was legal. This inconsistency made it really tough for states trying to regulate the industry and for businesses trying to operate within it. When Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize marijuana sales to adults in 2012, the Cole Memorandum was the response. It was an initial attempt to help make sure everyone was playing by the same rules when it came to cannabis. It set some guidelines that aimed to make things a little more straightforward for states, businesses, and cannabis consumers. The memo put businesses, investors, growers, and consumers at ease as they were less likely to face federal prosecution. It also caused the regulations to tighten up quite a bit. This was to legitimize the industry and make the standards for safety, testing, and compliance a lot better. There was a major sense of stability and predictability with the start of the Cole Memorandum. Businesses and dispensaries could keep their doors open with confidence and not be bothered by the law. They finally had the assurance they needed to invest, innovate, and expand their operations. As a result, more dispensaries, cultivation facilities, and secondary businesses popped up, giving us greater access to a diverse range of cannabis products. The surge in sales also reflected the increasing acceptance and normalization of cannabis use, both for medical purposes and adult recreational enjoyment. It was like the industry was coming out of the shadows and into the mainstream. The $4.6 billion milestone in 2014 was a true game-changer, showcasing the significant impact of the Cole Memorandum in facilitating the growth and success of the cannabis industry. It was a turning point that paved the way for even greater things to come. While the Cole Memorandum provided some level of guidance and assurance to states with legalized cannabis, it did not change the fact that cannabis remains illegal at the federal level. The Controlled Substances Act classifies cannabis as a Schedule I substance, which means it is considered to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. This conflict between state laws allowing cannabis and federal law prohibiting it created a complex legal landscape. The Cole Memorandum attempted to navigate this conflict by providing a level of discretion to federal prosecutors in enforcing cannabis laws, but it was not a permanent solution. The tension between state and federal laws on cannabis continued to pose challenges for businesses, consumers, and regulators. The rescission of the Cole Memorandum in 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions further highlighted this conflict and the uncertainty surrounding federal enforcement priorities. Attorney General Jeff Sessions took it upon himself to appeal the Cole Memorandum in 2018. Sessions stated that the memo "undermined the rule of law and the ability of our local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement partners to carry out this mission." This meant that the Cole Memo was out and the Sessions Memo was in. Legal states have their own rules and regulations when it comes to growing, selling and consuming cannabis within the state borders. But, since these state laws are the complete opposite of the federal laws, it is very contradicting. This contradiction creates a range of problems and uncertainties for businesses, consumers, and the law. For example, businesses operating in the cannabis industry may struggle to access banking services due to federal regulations, and consumers may face legal risks when purchasing or possessing cannabis, even in states where it is legal. The state-federal conflict also impacts our law enforcement, with federal prosecutors having the discretion to enforce federal cannabis laws in states where it is legalized. Any type of inconsistency in what law enforcement can and cannot do just leads to confusion and unpredictability for everyone in the cannabis industry. The guidelines that the memo provided to federal prosecutors were very understanding priorities that are needed to make the cannabis industry safe. Federal prosecutors have the discretion to decide how to allocate resources and enforce federal cannabis laws in states where it is legalized. After the Cole Memorandum was taken away in 2018, federal prosecutors got more freedom to decide how strictly they wanted to enforce cannabis laws. This means they can choose how much attention they want to give to enforcing federal cannabis laws in states where it's legalized. It gives them the flexibility to adapt to different situations and decide where to focus their efforts based on what they see as the most important issues related to cannabis. As the public's attitudes continue to shift and more people recognize the potential benefits of cannabis, policymakers are really feeling the pressure to reform existing laws. And the ongoing medical research is just revealing more and more about the incredible healing powers of cannabis - it's hard to ignore that kind of scientific evidence. Of course, the economic impact is a huge driver too. States and countries see the potential tax revenue, job creation, and business opportunities that come with a regulated cannabis industry. And the push for social equity is a never-ending battle. Just within the past couple of years, a massive amount of those imprisoned for low-level marijuana possession were set free, and pardoned of all convictions. Without a doubt, the Cole Memorandum impacted the cannabis industry in multiple positive ways. From regulating the growing and selling of the 'drug', to placing rules on whoever consumes it. No longer is consuming cannabis a major taboo topic and is being seen as a benefit to medical patients, law enforcement, the state's economy and lowering crimes. What is the Cole Memorandum?
