The Best Ways to Preserve Potency: Tips for Storing Weed in the Winter

It's not typically the first thing on our minds as the weather gets chilly, but it is definitely something to consider when it comes to your stash. Regardless of the weather outside, any cannabis user should know how to properly store their weed, as it's one of the best ways to preserve potency. A few things can go into consideration with this, like how much weed you're looking at, the kind of storage you use, and how often you smoke. But, just by storing your cannabis correctly, it can stay fresh for several months!

Understanding Cannabis Storage

Even while the cannabis plant is growing and producing quality buds, its environment needs to be cool, dark, and dry. Any excessive amount of heat, light, and humidity is going to negatively affect the cannabis plant, and in many ways.

The Importance of Humidity in Cannabis Storage

Humidity is a major culprit when it comes to completely destroying quality weed. Even a slight rise in humidity levels can lead to mold growth, a harsher inhale, and loss of potency in your flower. The golden humidity levels are between 59% and 62%.

Choosing the Right Storage Materials

Glass Jars for Cannabis Storage

We are all about the glass JARS when it comes to properly storing fresh cannabis. You'll probably notice that a majority of the flower we have on the shelves are stored in glass jars! The two huge advantages in using glass jars for cannabis storage is the fact that it is a non-porous material and has an airtight sealing lid.

Unlike plastic baggies, glass jars drastically reduce the chance for heat and humidity to enter. If you want to really guarantee proper storage, look for opaque glass jars. Many studies have shown how direct sunlight and UV rays completely destroy cannabis. With an opaque finish, sunlight is filtered out way more than a clear glass jar.

Lastly, when finding the perfect glass jar to store your cannabis in, don't think that bigger is better. You want your flower to sit comfortably in there, not too crammed and not too much to move around. Both will easily invite a bad environment into the jar and ruin your weed.

Humidity Control Methods

Having control of the humidity levels where your cannabis is stored is going to save you a lot of stress. You want to keep your eye on the percentages, again between 59% to 62% relative humidity (RH).  If it's too dry, the cannabis can lose flavor and potency, and if it's too humid, it can develop mold.

Humidity Packs for Cannabis Storage

Thanks to the fact that cigar smokers deal with the same problem of humidity, there are humidity packs to help out with the major culprit. If you're a frequent weed smoker, and buy around an ounce at a time, you have probably noticed a humidity pack in your stash.

These little packs are in a way like the silica packets that come in your brand new shoe box or a new leather purse. These packs are engineered to release or absorb moisture as needed to maintain an optimal relative humidity level for storing cannabis. The most common brand, Boveda, is highly touted in the cannabis community and do a great job at regulating humidity levels.

Winter Storage Considerations

While it's simple to think that the winter means less heat, humidity, and sunlight, it is not entirely the case.

Special Tips for Storing Weed in the Winter

You want to avoid any extremely cold temperatures. Yes, this even means you shouldn't put your weed in the freezer over the winter. That's only for extended duration storage. Not your everyday or couple-times-a-week smoking sesh.

Also, winter air tends to be very dry. This not only dries out your cannabis but also causes moisture build-up. Quite ironic isn't it?  But when your typical stash spot is near a door, window, floor, or anywhere that gets colder in the winter months, and then opened in a warmer area, that hot air will just fumigate the whole jar.

Lastly, without a quality storage container, you might have to keep an eye out for frost. The moment that your cannabis is in an environment with temps lower than 60°F, those potent and flavorful terpenes freeze up and fall off.

Conclusion

Recap: The Best Ways to Preserve Potency

All we can ever ask for is top-quality weed to stay top-quality weed for as long as possible. The best way we can achieve this is by correctly storing our cannabis during smoke sessions. Just keeping your buds out of direct sunlight, hot temps, and humidity works wonders. There are many accessories like humidity packs, hygrometers to measure humidity levels, and specific glass jars to get your weed in the most comfortable setting.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CROSSFADED?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CROSSFADED?

Being crossfaded refers to being simultaneously under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. The effects can vary but typically result in intensified experiences from both substances, often leading to altered perceptions, increased impairment, and a unique state of mind.

Smoking cannabis can make you loopy, but when cannabis is combined with alcohol it may send you spiraling into a unique and uncomfortable hell. In this article, we’re going to explore the overwhelming effects that mixing cannabis and booze can have on the human body.

It Started Out Like Any Other Night

If you are a ritual cannabis smoker, your evenings probably involve a little Mary Jane. If you are not a cannabis smoker, your nights may include having a few drinks at the end of the day.

Everybody is different, but usually people lean team cannabis, or team alcohol.

Have you ever been smoking cannabis, doing your thing, when all of a sudden an impromptu plan is introduced!? Your buddy calls you and asks if you want to go to Motown Mondays at the bar- so you go. What, you’re gonna go to the bar and not order a drink - right? (You are totally allowed to go to the bar and not drink, by the way!

But peer pressure is real, and sometimes we take one puff too many of that blunt that’s going around the circle of people because it’s easier than saying, “I’m good.” Or we let our friends buy us a drink we don’t really want because it seems important to them.

Whatever the case, when you start out with one vice and then switch to another, the results can be alarming.

The Symptoms

There’s a moment when the crossfade hits. You realize that something has changed, the way you feel suddenly SUCKS. Something has changed, your body chemistry. You might experience:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Sweat

  • Dizziness

  • Paranoia

  • Increased rapid heart rate

  • Anxiety

  • Nausea

  • Disorientation

The Science

There have been studies done that support evidence of alcohol metabolizing differently alongside cannabis .

Cannabis is antiemetic, meaning that the effects of cannabis can prevent feelings of nausea and reduce the need to vomit. This can be a problem.

Sometimes it is necessary to purge the horrific amount of alcohol you may have consumed, and being high while being too drunk can get in the way of the perfectly natural instinct to puke.

You may be left at the terrible intersection of feeling ill from being so drunk, and so high that you are staring at your hand being like, wtf is up with hands...

Am I Going to Feel Like This Forever?

Of course not. Though it is an all-consuming, dreadful feeling that you pretty much have to let run its course, and then it will go away.

The first thing you need to do is find a place where you feel safe to recuperate. This might mean you need to go home, or in a pinch, there’s always a bathroom stall where you can sit with your head over your knees and take a second to breathe.

Take as long as you need. Do not drive.

How To Uncross Your Fade

If you are feeling sick you obviously need to stop drinking booze and smoking cannabis for the evening.

Have a glass of water, get a breath of fresh air, as you are essentially in baby mode and you need to be your own mommy right now. The minutes may feel like hours, but hopefully you’ll regain your health and vigor by doing a few basic tasks. Like eating.

If you feel like you can eat, that is probably the easiest way out. Get some delicious food going, something bready, something saucy, maybe something cheesy. Give your stomach something to do other than feel like crap.

If you’re feeling the spins when you lay down on a bed, but you really want to lay down- lay on one side of the bed and put one foot down on the floor. This will literally ground you while you fixate on all the shapes you can see in the popcorn ceiling.

Have a big cup of water by your bed. Sometimes holding a big mouthful of water in your mouth for a few seconds and swallowing it slowly will make you feel like you’re re-hydrating in slow motion.

You Got This!

Pay attention to how many drinks you’ve consumed (always), and be sure for every alcoholic beverage you consume to match it with a glass of water. It may not seem fun to be strict and refuse alcohol alongside cannabis, but it’s easier than feeling terrible later.

Remember that this feeling is temporary. The best thing you can do is learn from your cross-faded mistake and not let history repeat itself.

Whether you have a really cool family or you’re going to a 420-friendly Friendsgiving, we’re here to share our three must-have cannabis-infused recipes to get the holiday season kicked off on a lit foot.

CBD or THC-infused Apple Cider Recipe

While you’re cooking up a storm in the kitchen, you’re going to want something to whet your appetite—and what better than a refreshing glass of apple cider? This classic fall beverage will delight your palate with the flavors of sweet apples, bright oranges, and an array of baking spices to give it that autumn vibe.

To infuse this pre-dinner drink, all you have to do is grab a THC or CBD tincture of your choice. Just a few drops in every glass will have you feeling ready to devour your plate of turkey and mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Makes about 12 servings

  • 10 medium apples (varying types), cut into quarters

  • 1 orange, cut into quarters

  • 4 cinnamon sticks

  • ½ tablespoon cloves

  • 16 cups water, more or less

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar or pure maple syrup

  • CBD or THC tincture of choice (amount depends on desired dosage)

  • Optional spices: ½ teaspoon allspice, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, and/or 1 inch fresh ginger

Instructions

  1. In a large stockpot over medium heat or a crockpot on medium, add apples, oranges, spices, and brown sugar. Cover the mixture with water by at least two inches. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for about two hours.

  2. Once apples are soft, use a potato masher, rubber spatula, or wooden spoon to mash the fruit. Return cider to a simmer and let it do its thing uncovered for one hour.

  3. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheeseclots, pressing on the leftover solids with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to squeeze all of the juices out. Toss the leftovers.

  4. Serve apple cider warm with a few drops of tincture to finish it off. Bonus points for garnishing with extra fruit or a cinnamon stick.

Cannabis-infused Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe

Let’s be honest. Thanksgiving dinner is all about the sides. Whether it’s the green beans, macaroni and cheese, fluffy dinner rolls or anything in between, everyone has their favorites. And one of the most popular Thanksgiving side dishes, is sweet potato casserole.

It’s sweet, it’s savory, and this version is filled with weed. To give this timeless dish an herbal twist, make a batch of cannabutter ahead of time. Then, add it to the casserole for an unforgettable finish.

Ingredients

Makes about 7 servings

Filling:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter/cannabutter, melted (ratio and amount will depend on desired dosage)

  • Extra butter to grease the baking dish

  • 3-4 large sweet potatoes (roughly 1 3/4 pounds), peeled and cubed

  • 1/2 cup milk of your choice

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans, almonds or walnuts

  • Optional: 1 ½ cup marshmallows

Instructions

  1. For the filling: Add the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes to a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are soft, usually about 15 to 20 minutes.

  2. Drain and cool. Then, mash the potatoes until smooth (a few lumps are perfectly normal) and set aside.

  3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and butter a 2-quart baking dish.

  4. Whisk together the butter, cannabutter, mashed sweet potatoes, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, salt, and eggs in a large bowl. Transfer to the prepared baking dish.

  5. For the topping: Combine the flour, brown sugar, butter, and salt in a bowl until moist and the mixture starts to clump together. Fold in the nuts.

  6. Spread the mixture over the top of the sweet potatoes in an even layer. Top with marshmallow if you’d like.

  7. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes or until mostly set in the center and golden on top. Serve hot enjoy.

Cannabis-infused Salted Caramel Cookies

Pumpkin pies are fun and all but few things feel like fall as much as salted caramel. Toss it in some cookies and you have a crowd-pleasing dessert on your hands. These buttery, cannabis-infused cookies hit all the right notes as you bring your night to a close.

Just grab your cannabutter and a few simple ingredients to impress the socks off your loved ones—or just make a batch for yourself. We won’t tell.

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 2 cups caramel chips (or soft caramel chews roughly chopped)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set aside.

  2. In a medium bowl mix together flour, baking soda, sea salt, and baking powder. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugars until well combined.

  4. Beat in eggs and vanilla until fluffy.

  5. Mix in the dry ingredients until fully combined.

  6. Fold caramel chips into the dough until evenly distributed.

  7. Roll about 2 tablespoons of dough at a time into balls and place them evenly spaced on your prepared cookie sheets. Pro-tip: Use a cookie scoop to make things simple. Sprinkle each cookie with sea salt before placing in the oven.

  8. Bake in preheated oven for approximately 8-10 minutes. Take them out when they are juuuust beginning to brown at the edges. Be careful not to overbake.

  9. Let them sit on the baking pan for a few minutes before removing to a cooling rack to cool completely. Or just devour them when they’re cool enough to touch. Your call.

Are there low-odor marijuana strains?

Are there low-odor marijuana strains?

Yes, there are low-odor marijuana strains. These strains are specifically bred to emit minimal or less pungent odors during growth and consumption. People often seek them for discreet consumption and to minimize unwanted smells, making them ideal for those who value privacy and odor control.

If you have ever smoked before, you know that weed is a stinky plant. While its scent can enhance the flavor and many of us love the smell, it can often be indiscreet and may even lead to some uncomfortable situations. Whether you just do not like the smell or want to find a more discreet way to smoke, many people find themselves wondering, are there any low-odor marijuana strains?

The short answer is, it depends. If you’re a cannabis cultivator, there are a number of strains, like Northern Lights and Blue Mystic, that growers suggest may not get the attention of nosy neighbors. If you are a smoker, weed smoke is, unfortunately, always going to be rather potent — especially if you get that loud from JARS.

That being said, there are a number of preventative measures you can take to reduce the smell, like using a handy sploof. Read on for a list of odor-reducing tips, what in the world a sploof is, and how to make one in the comfort of your own home.

Ways To Cover Weed Smell

For years, stoners have come up with ways to mask the smell of weed for an array of reasons. Whether you have an unexpected visit from the in-laws or you simply hate the lingering smell, there are plenty of tools to eliminate marijuana odors.

In The Home

  • Light an Incense. Incense like Nag Champa has been a favorite for both pre-and post-smoke sessions. Often used for yoga, meditation, and cannabis consumption, Nag Champa has a scent that is appealing to the masses unlike some overtly fruity or synthetic-smelling incense varieties. It also produces a tiny trail of smoke that can help cover-up actual marijuana smoke.

  • Use an oil diffuser. Another approach you could take is to strategically place a few oil diffusers around your home. As essential oils become increasingly popular, you can choose to go with a simple reed diffuser or an electric oil diffuser that uses steam to spread the oil around the room. Essential oils, like lavender and patchouli, not only entertain your senses but can also have various therapeutic effects.

  • Spray an air freshener. Many of us already have Febreeze or other air fresheners to keep our homes smelling fresh and bright. While they may not completely mask the smell of weed, they will definitely help reduce the smell after your smoke session.

  • Use a smoke eliminator. Ozium is a classic smoke eliminator that has been around for a number of years. It doubles as an air freshener with a vanilla and lemon-type scent that also literally grabs smoke out of the air and transports it to another realm. Much like air fresheners, it won’t completely remove the scent of weed, but it is a great base for all of the smoke you are about to swirl around your space.

On-The-Go

  • Use a hanging car air freshener. You know those little “Black Ice” trees you see hanging from almost every pot-lover’s rearview mirror? Well, they are there for a reason: to eliminate marijuana odor. While they may look cheesy, they have a potent scent that constantly works to cover up any strange odors. If you prefer to have something a little more modern, car air fresheners come in a plethora of different, shapes, sizes, colors, and scents.

  • Bring perfume or body spray. A little spritz can go a long way if you’re trying to smell your freshest after smoking a joint. Spray too much, and you’ll choke anyone around you, spray too little and you may not get the coverage you are looking for. Simply try one spray on your wrists, one on your clothes, and one on your hair.

Use a sploof. A sploof is a hollow cylindrical tube with some type of filtration in the middle that you can blow your smoke directly into. For a durable option, you can buy one online or in your local headshop. For a disposable, easy-to-use option, you can easily make one yourself with a few home essentials, like a toilet paper roll and dryer sheets, that you likely already have.

Making Your Own Sploof

As we briefly mentioned, a sploof is a cylindrical object that uses a filtering material, such as a dryer sheet, to remove smoke and marijuana odor particles from the smoke blown into it. One end functions as a mouthpiece, while the other filters the smoke through perforated materials of your choice. If you want to make one at home, you will need to gather a few things:

  • Empty toilet paper roll or paper towel roll

  • Dryer sheets

  • Rubber band

And that’s really it! Now that you have gathered your materials, here is how you put it together:

  1. Take your empty toilet paper or paper towel roll and stuff it with a dryer sheet or two. Just be careful not to stuff it completely full as you still need to exhale through it and there needs to be room for the smoke to travel.

  2. Take another dryer sheet or two, lay them over one end of the tube, and secure them with rubber bands. Your sploof is now ready to use!

It is really as simple as that. With just three simple household items and two easy-to-follow steps, you have a foolproof way to not only filter the smoke but reduce the lingering marijuana odor.

Final Thoughts

While there may not be any true low-odor marijuana strains, there are ways to make your smoking more discreet. With these tips in hand and perhaps even your very own sploof, you can now smoke all of your favorite JARS strains in peace. Come into either our Michigan or Arizona locations to see what skunky and funky strains we have in stock for you.
