The Ultimate Guide to Types of Rolling Papers: Choosing the Best

by JARS | December 11, 2024

Rollin' up a joint has been hot for centuries. In the 1600's over in Spain, rolling papers were actually created as a more affordable option compared to the bougie cigars. Sold in massive sheets allowing them to tear off the size of rolling paper needed. Again, this was centuries ago, now we have convenient little booklets with pre-cut papers, with more cool features popping up all around the community.
Of course they are commonly marketed for use with "tobacco". But we all know that a good majority of those buying rolling papers aren't using them to roll a cigarette. C'mon now. Even the plethora of different types of rolling papers available is a sure sign that stoners love rolling their weed up in quality paper. Especially the flavored options that really enhance the cannabis strain. Since the beginning, wood pulp rolling papers have been the OG, and still used today. Most of the time the wood pulp is combined with other fibers to give them a more quality feel when rolling. They are generally thicker than other materials used for papers and can either come bleached or unbleached. Wood pulp rolling papers are often bleached for a more consistent and cleaner look. Doing this also brings a smoother and less harsh inhale. Lastly, bleaching wood pulp rolling papers helps eliminate any natural smells and tastes you get from unbleached papers. The major turn off is the use of a toxic chemical, bleach… Flax papers are another material used to roll up cannabis. Flax plants have super nutritious seeds that are turned into a rich oil. Its long stems are strong, lightweight, and thin, making it perfect for rolling paper. They burn slower and let you enjoy a longer smoke sesh. Next are rice rolling papers. Legit rice is compressed into paper and completely natural. It's an extremely fine and delicate material though. Yes, it's a much safer alternative for your respiratory system, but not a great option if you are newer to the art of rolling joints. Especially when it's super humid where you are rolling, they will just end up tearing apart in your fingers. It's fair to say that the cannabis industry has their customers in their best interest. Looking for your next pack of rolling papers is literally like any of us in a candy shop. All the different sizes, flavors, styles, materials, colors, designs…. The list goes on. We will get to all of the fun flavors next, but for now, you should get familiar with the different sizes. The most common size, and what is used to roll the bomb pre-rolls you get at JARS, is 1¼”. From this standard size, the papers get wider, thinner, and longer. Single Wide (68 x 34): perfect for those who prefer smaller, more discreet joints or for solo sessions when you want just a quick puff without using too much herb. 1 1/4" (76 x 45): offers a bit more surface area, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy a medium-sized joint, allowing for a balanced smoke without being too overwhelming. 1 1/2" (76 x 60): great for those who like to roll larger joints to share with friends or for a longer, more relaxed smoking session without having to constantly roll up new ones. Double Wide (76 x 63): ideal for those who prefer extra-large joints or for special occasions when you want to roll up a big, impressive smoke to pass around and enjoy with a group. King (100 x 55): perfect for those who want a longer and thicker joint, providing a luxurious smoking experience that lasts a bit longer, perfect for kicking back and enjoying a leisurely smoke. King Slim (105 x 42): better for those who prefer a longer and slimmer joint, offering a sleek and elegant smoking experience with less paper taste and more focus on the herb's flavor profile. You really want to elevate your pre-roll game? Adding a burst of flavor to your joint is not only going to make it taste delectable, it can enhance the flavor of the strain you're smoking. Just think, a lemon flavored rolling paper with some finely ground up Super Lemon Haze flower? Yum! Flavors can range from minty and refreshing to fruity berries, zesty citrus to rich dessert tastes. Some avid cannabis connoisseurs agree that flavored rolling papers tend to take away the all natural, full-bodied flavor of the cannabis. But hey, different strokes for different folks right? Adding additional accessories to your rolled up joint drastically improves the smoking experience, but is certainly not mandatory in order to smoke a quality joint. If you have experienced smoking a hand-rolled joint as is, just weed and paper, you've probably had a run-in with getting "pooped" on. When you inhale and little scooby snacks get into your mouth or fall from the joint. This is how filters, also called crutches, made their way onto the scene. Aside from avoiding the inhalation of weed flakes, these crutches give you a more comfortable hold onto your joint. Plus, you'll end up forgetting what a roach is, since singing your fingers isn't an option when using a filter. Those who have been rolling up quality joints for years will most likely have a brand and type of rolling paper they are religious to. It comes down to the way the paper feels between your fingers, how much weed you roll up, how well it glues together, the taste, the burn rate… There are plenty of reasons why a person chooses specific papers over another. Several of the same brands who make and sell rolling papers for cigarettes decided to hop on the bandwagon super quick once weed became legalized. For example, the very widely known brand Zig Zag. Since then, more and more brands are perfecting the rolling paper industry. Here's the brands we highly recommend rollin' up with. The OG of rolling papers and easy to spot with the bright orange packaging. You can get ultra thin, hemp, kings, slims, flavored, and all sizes. We love RAW papers! They are the best, natural, unrefined rolling papers made from pure hemp. There is no bleach used in the process so its burn is extra smooth. They come in all available size lengths and also sell separate booklets of filters! Super big on the "natural" materials, like flax. What sets OCB rolling papers apart from other brands is how evenly they burn and with very little ash. The brand carries different sizes and premium or bamboo options. All about being sustainable and friendly to our planet. All of their papers are made using rice paper, which burns super smooth and clean. Due to the material used, Elements papers are very thin. But, this means you get the full flavor of your weed. We all like to have a little fun here and there. Maybe not the most "top quality" option in rolling papers, but the flavors are fire! The brand uses a "triple flavor dip" technology to really pack a punch of deliciousness to your mouth. What are Rolling Papers?

How to Measure Weed: Quantities, Weights and Slang
How to measure weed seems pretty obvious: you just weigh it, duh. But it's not that simple. So here's a quick guide so that you have the knowledge you need to become an instant pot professional.
At first glance, the question of how to measure weed seems pretty obvious: you just weigh it, duh. That being said, it is a common question amongst newbies to the cannabis game or anyone new to the legal market. If you’ve never heard of an eighth or your only reference for a dime bag is Dimebag Darryl (RIP), then you are in the right place.
As always, JARS is here to help get everyone on the same page about how to measure weed so that you have the knowledge you need to become an instant pot professional.
Breakdown of Weed Measurements
While the metric system is not popular in American culture, it is your friend when it comes to measuring marijuana. Every measurement of cannabis starts with the humble gram and generally stops at an ounce, which is 28 grams of weed.
So let’s start with the smallest measurement and work our way up from there.
Gram
If you want to buy a singular gram of weed, A gram is often the smallest weight of weed you can buy in a dispensary and is a great way to sample something new. One gram will easily fit into the palm of your hand and is enough for a few bowl packs or perhaps a joint or two. While dime bags are generally a thing of the past due to rising medical marijuana costs, a gram of weed is probably as close as you can get.
The rest of the units of measurement for cannabis have to do with the father of grams, ounces — usually described either in full or a fraction.
Eighth
Perhaps the most common type of marijuana measurement, an eighth describes an eighth of an ounce of weed, otherwise known as 3.5 grams. For many users, an eighth of weed is the perfect amount for their needs. It is enough to roll a fat Backwoods blunt, several joints, or a handful of medium-sized bowl packs.
Quarter
Next on the measurement roster, we have quarters. Double the size of an eighth, a quarter refers to a quarter of an ounce of weed or 7 total grams. Technically speaking, a quarter weighs 7.0874 grams, but it is relatively agreed upon in the cannabis world to round down to the nearest gram.
A quarter often leaves enough cannabis at your disposal to roll several papers (whether it is a blunt or a joint), an array of bowls, and maybe even get you started with making your own at-home edibles.
Half
Hopefully, by now you are starting to catch on, but a half refers to a half-ounce of weed or 14 grams. If you ask your budtender for a half, they will instantly know what you mean and get you set up with the weed of your choice.
Ounce
You guessed it: An ounce describes a full ounce of weed aka 28 grams.
When you're purchasing weed in a dispensary, an ounce is usually the highest volume you can buy at any one time. It is also often the legal amount you can carry as a recreational patient (like in Arizona) while medical marijuana cardholders can sometimes legally carry a little more (Michigan medical marijuana patients can possess up to 2.5 ounces of flower).
That being said, people who work within the cannabis industry, such as buyers and dispensary owners, can buy in much larger wholesale quantities — including pounds and kilograms. One pound is made up of 16 ounces — which weighs in at a whopping 448 grams.
For your viewing pleasure, here is a simplified reference chart of how weed is measured — and how much each measurement weighs in grams:
How To Make Sure You’re Getting What You Paid For
When you purchase weed at a dispensary like JARS — whether you're buying a singular gram to test out a new strain or investing in a full ounce to bake your world-famous pot brownies — you want to make sure you're getting exactly what you paid for. While cannabis these days is often pre-measured, the only true way to know for sure that your cannabis is the proper weight is to weigh it for yourself.
Simply find an accurate food scale or sensitive scale specifically designed for cannabis, so you can rest peacefully knowing that you got the most bang for your buck.

How To Talk To Your Parents About Legal Cannabis
Approach the conversation about legal cannabis with your parents using these steps. Educate yourself about cannabis laws and facts, choose an appropriate time and setting, be open, honest, and respectful, address concerns, and provide reliable resources. Foster understanding and communication for a productive discussion. Now that the pandemic is (sort of) over it’s time to fly back home and spend time with your parents after over a year of being away. And if anything, these long months apart has taught us that time is one of the most valuable things we have—so is now a good time to talk to your parents about legal cannabis? Let’s get one thing clear: your parents know what’s up. They’ve been around the block, they remember Rock N’ Roll, Ronald Reagan, and Rick James (hello! what else could the song Mary Jane be about??). They know about weed, they’ve probably even smoked weed at least one time at a party. And it would probably come as no surprise to them that you smoked weed and watched a lot of Spongebob over quarantine. But just because they know the deal doesn’t mean that weed has helped them lately. Your parents are getting older, which is actually a great reason to talk to them about medical marijuana. But how you ask? In this article, we’ll give you all the juicy details on how to talk to your parents about legal cannabis and how it may be able to help them in their daily life. I think we can all agree that Boomers and Generation X could afford to have some chill in their lives. Whether they’re a free-loving flower child or a straight-laced businessman, chances are your parents have spent their entire lives working way too hard. So let’s face it. Their bodies hurt. Ask your parents how their bodies are feeling lately. Most likely, they’ll tell you something hurts. Our parents take anti-inflammatories like Advil daily, they drink alcohol to ease their aching bones at night, or addiction-prone opioids to deal with pain the “traditional way”—but things are beginning to shift. Nowadays, we’re seeing adults over 65, who make up 2.9% of the population, are sparking up because weed has a good reputation for helping people simply feel better. If you live in a state (like Michigan or Arizona) where you are able to legally purchase topicals, we suggest gifting your parents a cannabis-infused topical that may be able to relieve some of those aches and pains—think of it like offering them a little getaway in a jar. But if your parents are retired and are not partaking in weed, they could be missing out on some amazing leisure time. If your family likes The Weather Channel and Seinfeld reruns, they’re about to like them a whole lot more. Even though medical marijuana is not a big deal to us, our parents probably know that weed is technically classified as a schedule 1 drug (along with heroin and ecstasy), and it’s still illegal on a federal level. According to this scheduling, weed is thought to be more addictive than Ketamine and Xanax, but all of my stoner friends can confirm that this is just not the case. Every day 38 people die from overdosing on prescription opioids. Meanwhile, ZERO people have died from getting stoned to the bone, eating snacks, and going on a very nice walk. So respectfully tell your parents to put that in their pipe and smoke it. And remember that the United States used to deem alcohol and desegregation illegal. Can you imagine? As of May this year, the use of medical cannabis products is legal in 36 states and 4 territories, and the laws are changing all the time for good reason. Medical marijuana may be able to a slew of conditions, including pain and stress management. Plus, communities that legalize pot and free up the police force to concentrate on actual crime are on the path to being more anti-racist. Sure, some people are sticklers for the rules. But most states have decriminalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. And according to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, fewer than 8% of people in the US think that marijuana should be totally illegal (and those people who are not in favor of legalization are likely to be over 75, white, and Republican...arguably they could stand to spark up a doobie more than any of us). No problem. They don’t have to get lit to reap the benefits of pot, thanks to a little something everyone has been talking about called cannabidiol, or CBD for short. CBD is great for any cannabis newbies. It has many of the same potential wellness benefits as THC without the psychoactive effects that can be overwhelming or intimidating to someone that is new to the weed game. Although weed seems to be more effective when there are both THC and CBD components present (this is referred to as the entourage effect), THC is not necessary. Especially for someone who is getting started, or re-acquainted with the sticky-icky. There are many CBD-infused edibles, tinctures, capsules, and balms available, and are specifically known to help people get a good night’s sleep, something all of us could use a little more of. And if you don’t know where to start, just ask your friendly and knowledgeable JARS budtender for some good parental recommendations. They get questions on behalf of parents all the time, and they’ve probably helped their own parents find some relief. We hope this guide has helped you figure out exactly how to talk to your parents about legal cannabis. Now that you know it might not be as big of a deal as you thought, what are you waiting for? Encourage them to talk to their primary care physician about medical marijuana to get a bonafide referral from someone with an M.D. and figure out what kind of medical marijuana products might be right for them. And remember, if they are not receptive or have a vendetta against the devil’s lettuce, and hate that you are talking to them about weed, you can always blame some article you read that told you to try and get your parents high. We don’t mind being your scapegoat. But, if they are interested, we challenge you to smoke with your parents and listen to all of their favorite music for extra credit. Even though it might seem like that is an impossibility, you would be surprised how many parents are happy to open up and share a smoke with their kid. It’s definitely a vibe. How Weed Can Help Your Parents
But isn’t weed illegal?
Okay, but my parents don't want to get high.
